Cantina Cleto Chiarli

In 1860 Cleto Chiarli's ostertia was doing well, helped by the Lambrusco he made for his clientele This prompted him to become a full-time wine producer – Chiarli is the oldest producer of sparkling wines in Emilia-Romagna and remains family owned, now fifth generation. With Cleto's son Amselmo production exceeded a million bottles a year in the 1930's, and export began to England, France and Germany in Europe, and further afield to the USA and South America. But WW2 saw their winery in Modena completely destroyed and production would not start again until 1946. Originally Lambrusco was a frizzante or semi-sparkling wine made in the ancestral method, which continued to ferment in the bottle after sealing, but in 1959 Chiarli pioneered the Charmat, or tank method, and this gave them the opportunity to make their wines spumante or fully sparkling. This red effervescent, fruity and harmonious wine became a sensation. Modernising and restructuring continued through the decades, and today the wines are made in a modern cellar with the most advanced technology and state-of-the-art equipment. Chiarli have over 120 hectares of vineyards spread over three estates, which are sustainably and organically farmed. The Chiarli wines are innovative with a strong territorial, identity, focusing on the iconic grapes of Modena with Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Salamino and Pignoletto, supported by Grechetto Gentile and Chardonnay to create a range of dry and sweet, red, white and rosé wines in both spumante and frizzante styles. Chiarli are a benchmark for Lambrusco and have won many national and international awards, and they continue to be an innovator in the production of this much misunderstood wine – Lambrusco!
