Coriole

Coriole was founded by Hugh and Molly Lloyd with a small group of friends in 1967 when they bought the 12 acre Chaffeys estate in McLaren Vale, one of Australia's oldest and most acclaimed wine regions, about a 45 minute drive south of Adelaide. Records show that vines were first planted on the Coriole site as far back as 1873, and the plot had Shiraz vines that were planted in 1919 directly after the end of World War 11; their Estate Reserve Shiraz is regarded as one of McLaren Vale's greatest wines. The Lloyds became sole owners in 1969, and the business remains family run, now third generation. Coriole own or manage most of the vineyards from which they source their grapes. There are 25 vineyards in total, from 90 years old to 3, all farmed organically and grown predominately on the terra rossa soils the region is so famous for, producing red wines with a deep colour and a great capacity for ageing. Coriole also manage vineyards in the sub-regions of Blewitt Springs, Willunga, and McLaren Flat. They grow roughly 65% Shiraz, 10% Sangiovese, 5% Chenin Blanc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Nero d'Avola, with the remaining 10% composed of Fiano, Grenache, Barbera, Mourvedre and Montepulciano amongst others. Coriole are actually Australia's longest continuous producer of Sangiovese, having planted this Italian variety in 1985, and also introduced Australia to, and pioneered, Fiano in 2001 and Piquepoul in 2010. This variation affords them a diversity of terroirs to work with and they produce a comprehensive range of premium wines.
