Curatolo Arini

Curatolo is the oldest family-owned Marsala house in Italy, founded in 1875 by Vito Curatolo. That is a mere 15 years after Garibaldi conquered Sicily and, when the Kingdom of Naples followed, Italy was unified. They have always used the same beautiful vintage art nouveau style labels on their bottles, designed by Ernesto Basile, the father of the Sicilian Art Nouveau movement. Vito died in 1896, and his sons, Francesco, Vito, Leonardo and Giuseppe continued the business and the expansion of the winery. Today Curatolo remains family run, now by Vito's grandson Roberto and great grandson Sergio, together with the new generation of Ricardo and Alexandra Curatolo. In the 1970's the company joint ventured with Seagram and began the production of table wines. They have five vineyards in western Sicily. The Chirchiaro between Salemi and Vita is planted at 500 metres above sea level on limestone-siliceous soils with Grillo, Cataratto and Inzolia. Gagliardetta, on the hills facing Castellammare del Golfo at around 300 metres, is planted with Zibibbo on limestone soils. San Cataldo, in the Caltanissetta region planted at 500 metres with Nero d'Avola on limestone and clay soils. Fulgatore, in the Trapani region at 170 metres is planted with Syrah on limestone soils, and Marsala, in the coastal area of the Marsala DOC, in the districts of Triglia Scaletta and Birgi, is planted with Grillo, Cataratto and Inzolia on calcareous-clay soils. Curatolo's portfolio of modern still wines express the uniqueness of their terroirs, whilst their range of Marsalas, the King of Italian fortified wine can be found in every style from dry to unconscionably sweet.
