Deakin Estate

Deakin Estate is located in Mildura in northwestern Victoria. The property was purchased in 1967, and named in honour of Alfred Deakin who served as second Prime Minister of Australia and played a key role in establishing national institutions during his three terms. In the 1880's he also pioneered irrigation to this arid area by encouraging the Canadian-born Chaffey brothers to transform the barren land; they were water-engineering specialists who had already established irrigation schemes in California. Up until 1980 when the winery facility was built, the grapes had been sold on, but now the management committee of the estate wanted to create their own wines. Accordingly the Deakin Estate Range was launched in 1994. Some of the vines were of a considerable age by then, and new vines were also planted. In 2020 the estate was bought by Calabria Family Wines, who are one of Australia's top 20 wine producers. They only use fruit from the Big River Zone to make their wines. Here the ample flow of the Murray River defines the geological and climatic conditions of the region, and the rich fertile soils and warm climate create the prefect environment for growing grapes. They work with an array of grape varieties; the white Chardonnay, Viognier, Muscat, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Pinot Grigio, and the red Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz all feature. The wines have eye-catching labels, but Deakin Estate are environmentally aware, and use light and energy efficient “Lean+Green® ” glass bottles which weigh 360 grams instead of 500 grams. These wines are brimming with flavour, expressing the varietal character of where the grapes come from, and are terrific value for money.
