Domaine Joseph Drouhin

The domaine was founded in 1880, by Alfred Drouhin, an enterprising young man from the Chablis region of Burgundy who, at the age of 22, settled in Beaune and founded his own wine company. His son Maurice began to acquire vineyards including some in the illustrious appellations of Clos de Mouches and Clos de Vougeot. In 1957 Robert Drouhin succeeded his father and expanded the domaine to its present dimensions. He was one of the first in Burgundy to introduce lutte raisonnée, or the “reasoned struggle” in the vineyards (a practice which uses chemicals less often and less aggressively, and only when absolutely necessary), and to build a laboratory of oenology, which was run by Laurence Jobard, the first female oenologist in Burgundy. The domaine has always been in the hands of the Drouhin family, run today by Robert's children: fourth generation Philippe, Véronique, Laurent and Frédéric. There is also an estate in America, Domaine Drouhin Oregon, in the Willamette Valley which was established in the late 1980's. The vineyard holdings in Burgundy were acquired through the years by judicious purchases and agreements between families and now, with 80 hectares under vine with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in close to 90 appellations, Joseph Drouhin is one of the largest estates in Burgundy. There are 38 hectares in Chablis, 38.5 hectares in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, and 3.5 hectares in the Côte Chalonnaise. These are comprised of a majority of glittering Premier and Grand Cru sites, featuring Bâtard-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Musigny, Clos Saint-Denis, Bonnes Mares and Marquis de Laguiche to name a view. For some of the regional and village wines they compliment their grapes from other growers who have been long-term partners. Joseph Drouhin farm with an organic and biodynamic approach; their philosophy is “to bring natural answers to natural problems”. They also grow their own vine stocks in their own nursery to preserve their genetic heritage and favour low yields. From their array of vineyards a dazzling range of red and white wines are produced; those designed to be drunk young are fresh and subtle, whilst wines designed for ageing develop a luscious complexity. The family belongs to the Primum Familiae Vini, which is an association of family-owned wineries, established in 1993 by Robert Drouhin and Miguel Torres, it has a membership limited to 12.
