Gobillard

The Champagne house that would become J.M. Gobillard et Fils was established in 1933 when Gervais Gobillard decided he wanted to become independent of his family, grow his own vines and make his own champagne. His savings were meagre, but he managed to buy just 1 hectare of vines in Hautvillers. It was hard going for a such a small concern competing with the big champagne houses. But Gervais persevered, his diligence paid off, and he was able to build a loyal customer base. The world's desire for champagne was growing; it was becoming a more democratic drink, not just reserved for the elite of society. The demand for vines increased as growers seized the opportunity to expand which, during the 1970's and 80's, was still a possibility. Gervais' entrepreneurial son Jean-Marie and his wife Françoise started up a vine nursery which was a rapid success and allowed them to increase their own business, so that by 1982 they had grown their holdings to 8 hectares. The house is located in Hautvillers, in the Marne region of Champagne, a few metres away from the church where Dom Pérignon is buried – this indeed is the very cradle of Champagne! Gobillard remains family owned, run today by fourth generation members of the family. They now have 33 hectares of their own vineyards under vine with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, many of these vineyards are Premier Cru, and were once owned by the Abbey of Hautvillers where Dom Pérignon was a monk and cellar master. These vineyards are certified HEV Level 3 [High Environmental Value]. Additionally grapes are supplied from a few selected growers that work a further 125 hectares in some of the most prestigious crus. A comprehensive range of very well-priced champagnes are produced.
