Heartland

Heartland came about in the late 1900's, when Ben Glaetzer, the dynamic and talented winemaker of the acclaimed Glaetzer winery in the Barossa Valley, became captivated by the outstanding quality of grapes being cultivated in some of South Australia's lesser-known wine regions, in particular the cool climate Langhorne Creek. This is one of the county's oldest vinicultural regions, first planted in 1850, and home to some of the oldest recorded Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world. So he teamed up with Scott Collett, Grant Tilbrook and Nick Keukenmeester, three of Australia's wine industry veterans, to create the Heartland label and craft outstanding wines. Their aim was to consistently achieve the best flavour possible in the grapes and convert this into exceptional wines; the first vintage was produced in 2001. Today Heartland source all their grapes from Langhorne Creek and only produce red wines. These are handcrafted by Ben at Barossa Vintners in Tanunda which, although some 100 kilometres away, has all the equipment and resources he needs to make the wines. The state-of-the-art winery is gravity fed and solar-powered. Here the wines are made in the most natural way possible, with long, cool fermentations producing fresh and elegant wines. They are passionate about the environment and farm in a sustainable way. They even have a herd of goats for weed control. The focus is on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, but Malbec, Lagrein and Dolcetto are also grown to create unique blends. Heartland began as a small set up but has evolved into a substantial business which produces award-winning wines that truly reflect the terroir of the Langhorne Creek region and, for wines of this quality, are terrific value for money!
