White grape variety known as Doña Branco in Portugal, it is predominantly found in Galicia, Spain, as well as throughout Portugal. It is authorized in the DO's of Valdeorras and Monterrei in Galicia and Bierzo and Castile and León, where it can produce some excellent wines. Judicious wine making is required to limit the degree of bitterness imparted from the thick polyphenol-rich skins during vinification.
