Albarino

White grape variety grown in Galicia, Spain, and in the Vinho Verde region of Portugal where it is known as Alvarinho. In the Rías Baixas zone (Galicia, Spain), it accounts for 90% of plantings; the wines produced have recently become increasingly fashionable and sometimes expensive. The style of wine produced is rich, fruit driven, and sometimes high in alcohol and acidity. It has been speculated that Albariño arrived in the Iberia region via Cluny monks in the 12th century, and that it is related to Petit Manseng. Further research is needed to confirm this.
