Black grape variety originating in Italy where the highest quality examples come from Piemonte, specifically in the Monferrato region. The pinnacle of Barbera production is exemplified in the Piemonte DOCs of Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba, especially when grown on well drained soils.
It is also grown in the regions of Puglia, Emilia-Romagna, Campania, Sicily and Sardinia. High quality Barbera wines are also produced in Australia, Argentina and California. Barbera is a late ripening variety that is notoriously high in acid.
Style-wise young Barbera wines are punchy and brimming with cherry, they age into denser wines, expressing notes of baked stone fruits and vanilla.
