Grenache Blanc

White grape variety that is directly related to the red grape Grenache, it is thought to have mutated from the Spanish red Grenache and then spread across into France. It is mostly cultivated in the Rhône and northeast Spain. Grenache Blanc is durable and fairly easy to grow as it is disease resistant and thrives successfully in arid conditions. Grenache Blanc is the fourth most cultivated white variety in France, after Ugni Blanc, Chardonnay and Sémillion.

Grenache Blanc is often blended with Viognier, Rolle, Marsanne and Roussanne within the wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon. It is also a permitted grape in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Through the use of careful farming and vinification opulent, flavoursome wines can be produced that even have ageing capability.
