Gruner Veltliner

White grape variety primarily grown in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. In 1990 DNA testing confirmed Traminer as a parent and later on St. Georgen, as the other parent. It is capable of yielding colossal amounts of fruit, up to 100hl/ha, which potentially results in a bland wine. However with expert nurturing and correct vinification, high quailty wines are produced that sometimes have ageing capability. This variety is also known for producing the base wine for Sekt, the sparkling wine, and is grown successfully in New Zealand and the USA.

Producers such as Fred Loimer have enhanced the grapes reputation through the creation of esoteric wines that express elaborate characteristics. Loimers production philosophy focuses primarily on the fruit itself, recognising the importance of working with a high quality product he works with experienced growers, all of whom known their vineyards intricately. Loimer then employs minimal intervention within the winery, which helps to maximise the expression of Terroir within the wine.
