White grape variety primarily cultivated in Western Sicily where it is used for the production of Marsala wine, which is a fortified wine produced using a Solera style system. The grape is also used for the production of still wines in the Tuscan Maremma where it is known as Ansonica, it is frequently blended with Vermentino, and is ideal partner for seafood. Some producers are fermenting the wines on the skins to enhance varietal aromas.
