Nero d'Avola

The Nero D’Avola grape is best known for producing dark, spicy, plum and chocolate flavoured wines, with fantastic body, rich colour and long aging potential, particularly when oaked.  Also known as Calabrese this grape is thought to have originated in Calabria, although, it is now most important in Sicily where it was originally grown on the southern tip but has now spread northwards. As a result, it is proportionally the highest planted red grape in Sicily with around 14,500 hectares, as well as making some of the country’s top wines.  The warm spicy flavours are gained by the hot climates the Nero D’Avola vines enjoy and need in order to produce fully ripe grapes. More recently, Nero D’Avola has been planted in Mendocino County, California.
