Prugnolo Gentile

Prugnolo Gentile is also known  as Sangiovese but this name is used when the grape is grown in and around the town of Montepulciano. It is a black grape variety grown mainly in the centre of Italy and is Italy’s most widely planted variety .Sangiovese is the primary grape for red Toscana wines, Chianti, Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano, and the only grape permitted for the production of  Brunello di Montalcino, as well as a part of the blend for most Super Tuscans. The name translates as ‘Blood of Jove’, Jove being a Roman name for Zeus. This is indicative of the deep, bright colour, as well as the love for this grape in Italy. Sangiovese is also widely planted in Lazio, Umbria and in the Marche. It is also cultivated in Corsica, where it is known as Nielluccio. Wines are also made from this grape in California and Australia and, using an early ripening clone, it has also been grown in cooler climates such as Oregon and Washington.
