Touriga

Black grape variety, considered as Portugal's flagship grape. It is thought to be the most desirable grape of all the grapes used in Port production, providing structure, tannins and body to the blend. It can be difficult to cultivate due to its tendency towards poor fruit set and low yields. Throughout the last few decades it has increasing been used to produce table wines in the Douro and Dáo, resulting in deep coloured luxuriously flavoursome wines. Touriga Nacional is becoming popular in the rest of Portugal, specifically the Alentejo, Estremadura and Ribatejo. Outside Portugal, it is grown in Australia and Spain.
