Trebbiano

White grape variety originally from Italy which is now prolific in Portugal, Bulgaria and France as well as the New World. In France it is also known as Ugni Blanc and Clairette Ronde. It is thought to potentially produce more wine than any other variety in the world. In France Ugni Blanc makes the base wine for Brandy. The variety is ideally suited for this purpose due to its lack of aromatic character, yet highness in acidity.

Trebbiano is planted all over Italy, consquently standard blends of Vino Bianco will contain some of it. In Portugal Trebbiano is known as Thalia. The variety is also found in Bulgaria, Greece and Russia, as well as in South Africa, California, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, where it's used for brandy production and as a cheap blending component.
