Viura

Viura is a white grape variety also referred to as Macabeo and Macabeu in Catalan. It is northern Spain’s most planted white variety, and France’s eighth most planted variety, due to its soaring popularity in the Roussillon. Macabeo is a functional and versatile grape as it is used to effectively tone down intense reds in Spain, and as a blending component for Rosé wines in France.  It is also used in the production of Vins Doux Naturels (VDN) in the Roussillion. In the Languedoc it is blended with Bourboulenc and Grenache Blanc. In Penedés in Spain it combines with Parellada and Xarel-lo as one of the three classic varieties of Cava. It has a good ability to withstand oxidation, which might explain its popularity as a blending component for white Rioja, as the nature of the vinification process is typically quite aerobic, it is in this region that it is known as Viura.
