Louis Barruol is the 14th generation Barruol to make wine at Saint Cosme. The Ch. was built in the late 16th Century on the site of a former Roman villa, and the remains of a Roman wine cellar, carved into the stone of the hillside, still exist in the Ch.'s caves. There are 37 acres of vineyards and the vines average 60 years of age. The old plots (pictured on the Gigondas label) and stitch across the escarpment of the ragged Dentelles de Montmirail, an oft-painted mountain range. Louis is an evangelist for the terroir of Gigondas and produces several single-vineyard wines to demonstrate its variety and quality. All the wines, from the humble Cote du Rhone to the incredible Gigondas Valbelle, are treated with the same care and attention, technical precision and artistry.The D.’s wines are labelled Ch. St Cosme but there are also a number of excellent negociant wines labelled simply ‘St Cosme’.
