Mendoza based Achavel-Ferrer, described by Jamie Goode as Argentina’s most impressive producers was founded in 1998 by a group of Italian and Argentinean friends who all shared a dream to make world-class wine. Their vision was to focus on vineyard practices in order to create fruit that expresses the land. The iconic wine maker and shareholder Roberto Cipresso is a committed terroiriste, he is certain that the land itself is of paramount importance when compared with wine making decisions. The property is comprised of five hectares of 66-year-old vines, grown on gravel soil planted at 5,500 vines per ha, 960m above sea-level. Eleven hectares of 86-year-old vines, at 670m, planted at 4,000 vines per hectare on heavier soil, with some clay. The vines are extremely low yielding, producing just 18hl/ha, this results in an intense, concentrated wine. These wines are truly some of the finest that Argentina has to offer.
