Beronia
Beronia was founded in 1973 by a gastronomic society whose great love of food and wine attracted them to the idea of producing their own Rioja, in the purest most traditional Rioja style. It?s name comes from the history of the land on which it is located. The origin of the region we now know as La Rioja goes back to the 3rd century BC, when it was inhabited by the ?Berones?, a population of Celt warriors. Their first villages, Tricio, Varea and Leiva, set the boundaries of Beronia, today?s La Rioja. The winery was purchased by the Gonzalez Byass family in 1982.Beronia winemaker Matias Calleja has worked at Beronia for 31 years, starting in the cellar and becoming winemaker 5 years later. He has a specific expertise and passion for oak and has spent much of his three decades at Beronia experimenting with different types of oak and oak combinations ? most notably the use of French oak heads and American staves ? seeking mastery of the relationship between the use of oak and its effect on the taste of the wine. The winery owns an incredible 29,500 barrels and is crafting some of the most elegant, compelling Tempranillo wines in Spain right now.
