Victor de la Serna, renowned wine and restaurant critic, (whose day job is Editor for World Political Affairs at El Mundo newspaper, one of Spain’s big dailies) set up Finca Sandoval in 1998 in his wife’s native region of Manchuela, formerly part of the huge La Mancha DO. Championing wines made with Bobal, the local variety, along with Garnacha, Syrah and Monastrell, the Finca Sandoval wines are undisputably the best in the DO. The grapes are grown in various parcels around the winery. Poor soils, high altitude and a large difference between daytime and nightime temperatures make for ideal growing conditons. Both wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wines show structure, intriguing aromatics and a potential to develop with age.
