Description
One of the oldest estates in Marlborough, Isabel Estate was founded in 1980 by pilot Mike Tiller who identified the promising terroir while on repeated approaches to landing at Marlborough. Of course, they make beautiful Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and exceptional Chardonnay, but I wanted to highlight their Pinot Gris as a terrific alternative to the two other white varieties. With not as much acidity and tropical fruit as Sauvignon and less use of oak as with the Chardonnay, this Pinot Gris makes a great bridge between these two palates and a very versatile food wine. Aromas of red apple and pear, with subtle ginger spice, and stone fruit and baked apple tart on the palate. Extended lees ageing leads to a wonderfully creamy, textured body; there is a rich complexity here which will also develop nicely in bottle.
