Livio Felluga

Livio Felluga's father Michele started up a business in the late 1800's buying and selling wine in Istria, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. His son Marco began to grow grapes and make his own wine on the family farm south of Trieste in what is now southwestern Slovenia. Marco's son Giovanni continued the family wine business, opening a cellar in the 15th century town of Gradisca d'Isonzo Collio in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in 1938, but WW2 disrupted this venture and, following the end of the war, Istria became part of Soviet-dominated Yugoslavia; the family lost their farm, and they settled in Collio. Two of Giovanni's sons would go on to establish their own wineries and be instrumental in the wine industry of Friuli; Livio is the brother of Marco Felluga who founded his own wineries in Friuli. Livio Felluga is recognised as the man who began Friuli's renaissance, re-establishing the area's winemaking heritage. Following the end of WW2, life was tough and a lot of the farming population abandoned their crops and moved away. But Livio was convinced of Friuli's potential and he settled in Brazzano and restored the first vineyards in Rosazzo in the region of Colli Orientali del Friuli, and planted new ones, introducing innovative ideas and methods. The 228 hectare estate presently has 159 hectares of sustainably and organically farmed vineyards under vine in Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli, divided between a mosaic of 320 individual plots with the majestic Alps as a backdrop. 14 different grape varieties are cultivated. They are undoubtedly white wine specialists, their flagship Terre Alte was first produced in 1981 and is considered to be one of Italy's most prestigious wines, but they also produce a handful of impressive reds from Merlot, Refosco, Pignolo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blends. Livio is justifiably proud of the rich heritage of Friuli, and on every one of his wine labels an ancient geographical map of Friuli's hillsides is depicted since 1956, symbolising the profound connection between the land and its history. The business is now in the hands of the sixth generation with Andrea Felluga at the helm. Andrea is the winemaker, he has experimented with stelvin closures for the past five years and is now confident that this is the way forward to retain freshness and perfume in his wines. He continues the legacy of crafting Livio's Felluga's wines in their unmistakable style. These are stylish wines with strong territorial identities. Their motto is “These wines should be enjoyed to the fullest, for the wealth of the past, the enthusiasm of the present and the strength of the future”.
