Maison Chapoutier

Maison M. Chapoutier have an impeccable pedigree, the family have been making wines in the Rhône Valley since 1808. Today, coming from a dynasty of winemakers, 7th generation Michel Chapoutier heads up the house, but it was Polydor Chapoutier who bought the first vineyards in 1879 and started the family's wine enterprise. Michel was just 26 years old, when he bought the business from his grandfather and began to build it up to become the icon it is today: one of the most prestigious names in the Rhône. He is a self-taught enthusiast who sees himself as “a wine-grower, winemaker and and wine lover”. Chapoutier are proponents of the biodynamic approach, and have been certified biodynamic since 1999. Michel's son Maxime and daughter Mathilde are the next generation to join the business and perpetuate the family's legacy. You may also notice their distinctive labels. In 1993, Michel Chapoutier turned on his TV to watch his friend, the blind musician Gilbert Montagne talking about his experience of buying wine. He said he felt uncomfortable about going into a shop alone because he didn’t know what wine he was choosing. Michel decided to use the braille text on every bottle of wine he produced and by 1996 this was a reality, making it easier for people without sight to be able to choose a bottle of wine to enjoy. Other producers have since adopted this approach, but Michel Chapoutier was the first. Although Chapoutier are celebrated for their Rhône wines, they produces wines from other appellations across France and also have collaborative projects in Australia and Portugal, striving to reflect the full potential of the terroirs and reveal the very best of what the soils have to offer. The family motto is “Fac et Spera”, which translates as “Do and Hope” and that just about sums up the patience and daring of wine-making. Michel's great grandfather Marius always said that “ A good wine is one that beckons us to take another sip”. You will definitely want to do this from Chapoutier's impressive portfolio of wines!
