Marco Felluga

The story of Marco Felluga began in the late 1800's when Michele Felluga started a business buying and selling wine in Istria, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. His son Marco began to grow grapes and make his own wine on the family farm south of Trieste in what is now southwestern Slovenia. Marco's son Giovanni continued the family wine business, opening a cellar in the 15th century town of Gradisca d'Isonzo Collio in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in 1938. WW2 disrupted this venture and, following the end of the war, Istria became part of Soviet-dominated Yugoslavia. The family lost their farm, and they settled in Collio. Giovanni's son Marco graduated from the renowned oenology school in Conegliano and worked with his older brother Livio for a while, until Livio started his own winery (he is the owner of Livio Felluga in Friuli). Marco stayed in Gradisca d'Isonzo and founded his own cellar under his own name in 1956. In 1967 Marco acquired the Russiz Superiore Estate in Capriva del Friuli, adding roughly another 50 hectares of cru-level vineyards to his family's holdings. Rather than combining these Marco decided to operate the property as a separate winery producing its own range of Russiz Superiore estate-grown wines. Today, Marco's son Roberto Felluga is at the helm, the great-great-grandson of the founder. There are 100 hectares of sustainably and organically farmed vineyards under vine for the Marco Felluga wines, with Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Verduzzo, Merlot, Refosco del Peduncolo for the production of dry white and red wines. Roberto's daughter Ilaria is training to join the business, the sixth generation of Felluga's to carry on the legacy, of what has become one of the premier producers in Friuli.
