Los Robles, Curico Valley, Chile : Vinos los Robles combines winemaking excellence with social initiatives. Following a devastating earthquake in 1939 which killed over 10,000 people, the Los Robles Co-operative was set up by local farmers and workers to help rebuild the community.
In June 2004 the winery received Fairtrade certification. The winery plays a pivotal role in improving social and economic conditions for employees and the wider community alike and promotes development and economic improvement of agriculture in general and vitiviniculture in particular.
To date the social premium has supported a range of projects including:
School bus – bought for children of El Corazon district
Housing programme – down payments for more than 30 Los Robles workers to buy a house.
Housing repair – funds for 30 Los Robles workers to fix homes in a poor condition.
Education programme - for all six schools in the poorest areas of Rauco, El Corazon and Palaquibudi.
Loan for drip irrigation – for members of the El Corazon co-operative.
Supplementary health insurance.
Description: Yellow with a greenish tinge. Mild tropical fruits and notes of flowers. Fruity, fresh herbs. Balanced in acidity, dry and persistent.
