Rolf Binder Wines

Hungarian immigrant Rolf Heinrich Binder and his Austrian wife Franziska arrived in Australia in 1950 and initially worked on the railways. But they met a vineyard owner and in 1955 purchased his Barossa Valley winery and renamed it Veritas. From inception their philosophy was to use primarily estate grown grapes from their own vineyards across the Barossa, cultivated with traditional viticultural methods to craft wines with traditional winemaking techniques. This is a legacy that Rolf and Franziska's daughter Christa Deans, who joined the family business in 1981, and her brother Rolf Binder Jr who came on board a year later perpetuate, and take Rolf Binder into the 21st century, with Rolf Jr gaining a world-wide reputation for his red wines, and Christa garnering plaudits for her Riesling. The Binder family vineyards cover four sites totalling over 100 acres across the Barossa and Eden Valleys. They also have long-standing relationships with a few select growers who supplement their own fruit when necessary. The different subregions allows them to showcase the varying nuances of the different terroirs in the valleys.
The 26 hectare Chri-Ro Vineyard was the source of the Veritas Winery's grapes for many years. It incorporates a block of Mataro (Mourvedre) vines planted in the 1880's, and is the source of their world-famous Heysen Shiraz, which may include a tiny proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in some vintages. It also provides the fruit for their flagship wine, a wine made with no compromise - the stunning full-bodied and complex Hanisch Shiraz, named in honour of the original owner of the vineyard, “Punch” Hanisch.
The 18 hectare Western Ridge Vineyard once bonged to the Fromm family, from whom Veritas purchased grapes in the early days. It was acquired by Rolf Binder in in 1995 and produces some of their finest fruit from old low-yielding vines.
Rolf Binder had purchased grapes from the 17 hectare Binder Deans Vineyard since 2001 but in 2013 they had the opportunity to acquire it. Since then they have been busy grafting some Semillon to Shiraz, and regenerating the wonderful old Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vines to return them to their former high quality.
The 46 hectare Riedl Vineyard holds a special place in their hearts; Riedl was the maiden name of Rolf and Christa's mother. This site is blessed with ancient vines, home to two blocks of magnificent old gnarly Shiraz over 100 years old. One of their ranges is entitled Bulls Blood, which they have produced for over 50 years, and is a tribute to the founder's Hungarian lineage.
Rolf Binder is steeped in history and produce a captivating portfolio of highly acclaimed Barossa wines, full of intense flavours and rich concentrated fruit.
