Selvapiana

In medieval times Selvapiana was one of the watchtowers built to protect the city of Florence on its north-east border along the River Sieve. It was enlarged and transformed into a summer villa for noble Florentine families and the Bishops of Florence during the Renaissance period. In 1827 Michele Giuntini, a successful banker, acquired the estate which remains in family hands, owned from 1957 by fifth generation Francesco Giuntini, but run since 1997 by his adopted sons Federico and Silvia. With no heirs of his own, Francisco adopted the sons of his estate manager Franco Masseti. Selvapiana is located in Chianti Rùfina, the smallest, but most distinguished of the eight subregions of Chianti, a historic area of production. It is also the highest of the Chianti appellations and the furthest from the coast. Francesco has always believed in the value of the Rùfina appellation. He was one of the first Tuscan producers to make a Reserva wine solely from Sangiovese, and to produce a single vineyard wine: Bucerchiale (this is now Selvapiana's flagship wine). Federico and Silvia Giuntini Masseti are part of a new generation of winemakers in the region who continue to drive for Rùfina wines to stand on their own and not be in the shadow of, or compared with, the more well-known Chianti Classico. 58 hectares of organically certified vineyards are cultivated in the foothills of the Apennines in the three appellations of Rùfina, Pontassieve and Pelago on clay-limestone soils. The proximity of the mountains and height of cultivation greatly influences the vineyards, creating a microclimate with cooler summers than other Chianti areas. There are marked diurnal temperatures, resulting in a slow ripening season, balancing the aromatic compounds of the grapes and imbuing the wines with fresh acidity and elegant, silky tannins. A new cellar was completed in 2005. The wines are fermented with native yeasts in a combination stainless steel and concrete, and aged, part in in oak barrels in the old cellar under the villa, and part in barriques in the new cellar. These wines have finesse and definition, with a multi-layered complexity and elegance.
