Tasca d'Almerita

Tasca d'Almerta was founded in 1830 when brothers Lucio and Carmelo Mastrogiovanni Tasca acquired the 1,200 hectares Regaleali Estate near the village of Vallelungo in the central interior of Sicily. They introduced modern agricultural technology into this rural part of the island and began to make wine. In 1840 the dowry of Lucio's wife included the Villa Camastra in Palermo (now called the Villa Tasca), and it was here in 1882 that Wagner finished the 3rd act of Parsifal whilst a guest at the villa. In 1890 disaster struck when phylloxera decimated the family's vineyards, but the innovative family created a nursery to graft their vines onto American rootstocks, and the vineyards were saved. In 1950 agricultural reform brought reshaping of the land and the their original 1,200 hectares at Regaleali was reduced to 500. In 1959 Count Giuseppe Tasca d'Almerita planted Perricone and Nero d'Avola vines, the basis of what would become, in 1970, the first single vineyard wine in Sicily: the rich and concentrated “Reserva del Conte” or “Count's Reserve” later called “Rosso del Conte”, and today it is one of their two flagship wines. The other flagship is a delightful Inzolia and Sauvignon Blanc blend called Nozze d'Oro, created by Giuseppe to celebrate his Golden Wedding Anniversary to his wife Franca in 1984. The business flourished, but until 1979 Tasca d'Almerita had only cultivated indigenous Sicilian grape varieties. Then Lucio Tasca, unbeknown to his father, planted the estate’s first international vines with four rows each of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The last two varieties were the first to be cultivated in Sicily and these brought the Tasca d'Amerita name to the attention of the world and they have never looked back. They continue to be family owned and run today by Count Lucio Tasca d'Almerita, and his two sons, eighth generation brothers Guiseppe and Alberto. They farm five impressive estates planted on different soils and in different climates across the whole of Sicily.
Tenuta Regaleali, the original family estate has almost 600 hectares with 12 different types of soils on which 12 different grape varieties are cultivated: Gewürztraminer; Sauvignon Blanc; Pinot Noir; Pinot Blanc; Perricone; Nero d'Avola; Nerello Mascalese; Moscato; Inzolia; Grillo; Grecanico and Catarratto.
Capofaro in Salina in the Aeolian archipelago has five hectares planted with Malvasia on volcanic sandy soils, from which elegant sweet white wines are produced.
Tascante on Etna grows Chardonnay, Nerello Mascalese and Carricante on it volcanic soils in steep terraced vineyards.
The historic Whitaker Estate on the ancient island of Mozia enjoys a unique microclimate. Tasca have had an agreement with the Whitaker Foundation since 2007 to restore a 12 hectare Grillo vineyard originally planted by the Whitaker family in the 19th century, from which a bright and salty singular white wine is produced. The whole island was bought by the archaeologist Joseph Whitaker in 1902. He discovered many treasures which are now displayed in a museum on the island.
Sallier de la Tour in Monreale has 50 hectares under vine with Grillo, Inzolia, Nero d'Avola and Syrah.
Tasca are committed to the environment and in 2018 were the first Italian agricultural company to gain dual sustainability certifications from VIVA and SOStain.
This historic estate with its prestigious history lovingly craft a broad portfolio of superb wines, each one a real gem!
