Trimbach

Trimbach was founded in 1626 by Jean Trimbach in Riquewihr in the heart of Alsace. His family had arrived from Switzerland to work in the silver mines of Ste-Marie-aux-Mines in the north-east of the region in the 16th century. In the 1840's the business was moved to Hunwihr and, following WW2, it moved again to its present site just outside the village of Ribeauvillé, at the foot of their Geisberg Grand Cru vineyard. By the end of the 19th century Trimbach had gained a worldwide reputation, largely due to Frédéric-Emile Trimbach, who in 1898 provided a new guarantee of quality and authenticity for the maison. The haunting Riesling Cuvée Frédéric-Emile, first produced in 1967, honours this innovative ancestor. The maison has been passed down from father to son though the centuries and today three Trimbach generations work closely together: 12th generation brothers Pierre and Jean work with their 11th generation Uncle Hubert, and Pierre's daughters Anne and Frédérique, and Jean's son Julien and daughter Pauline represent the 13th generation of Trimbachs to carry on the legacy. The Trimbach vineyards are located on some magnificent terroirs; 58 hectares of vineyards spread through the six Grand Cru villages of Rosacker in Hunwihr, Geisberg and Osterberg in Ribeauvillé, Mandelberg in Mittelwihr, Schlossberg in Kientzheim and Brand in Turckheim. Trimbach farm organically - they have done so since 2008 - and all the 35 growers from whom they augment their grapes are HVE3 certified. For more than 20 years new plantings have been from massale selections to always promote genetic diversity and preserve their vine heritage. Alsace has a very special climate and terroir. The Vosges Mountains act as a shelter from wind and rain, so the climate is dry and sunny and although the Alsatian vineyards are among the most northerly in France, it is actually the driest place in the country after Perpignan. The mosaic of soils, limestone rocks, including the shell limestone called “Muschelkalk”, marls, sandstone, and migmatites, create a rich tapestry on which Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Sylvaner and Pinot Noir are cultivated, with the object of bringing out the characteristics of the terroir in each of the varieties. Trimbach's most celebrated wine first made in 1919, is Clos Ste-Hune, a dry Riesling produced from a special Riesling parcel in the Rosacker Grand Cru vineyard just outside Hunwihr, which the family have owned for over 200 years. This racy and mineral wine is one of the world's most sought after wines from Alsace. Trimbach seamlessly blend tradition with modernity. The grapes are hand-picked, pneumatic presses gently force the juice from the grapes, which then descends by gravity to the cellar, where it is decanted using centrifugal force. Except for Pinot Noir, no malolactic fermentation is carried out. Following fermentation the wine is aged in contact with the gross lees for several weeks, the time determined solely by tasting and, when this is deemed sufficient, the wine is extracted and aged on fine lees for several more months. Then the wine is fined with ceramic filters, and aged in bottle before release. Trimbach are the aristocrats of Alsatian wines, masters of authentic dry and elegant wines; a benchmark for this restrained style, where the special terroir of Alsace is revealed in each impeccable bottle.
