Pinot Gris Trophy - Marlborough Wine Awards 2011
The unique ancient soils of Ara’s Wairau Valley vineyard are well suited to produce award winning Pinot Gris as well. Small parcels of fruit were selected for their structure and weight as well as their aromatics then hand harvested and gently whole bunch pressed. Combined aromas of pear, nectarine and a touch of honey flow through to floral, citrus and spice flavours balanced with a hint of natural sweetness and crisp acidity.

Pinot Gris Trophy - Marlborough Wine Awards 2011
Hand harvested on the 11th, 12th and 14th of April, this first crop from our vines on the Northern and Southern borders of the vineyard was in outstanding condition. Given the young age of the vines the fruit was left to hang in the autumn sun until fully ripe with a hint of noble rot (botrytis cinerea). The grapes were then transported to the winery, where they were whole bunch pressed in a gentle bag press, keeping the free run and lightly pressed juices separated. After a couple of days settling the two fractions were returned together for cold fermentation with aromatic enhancing yeasts. The resulting wine was then rested on lees to enhance palate weight until prepared for bottling.
