Marsanne

White grape variety possibly originating from the Northern Rhône where it is the main white grape grown. It is used in the production of Hermitage St.Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage.

Marsanne is capable of producing high yields, however careful farming is required as it is susceptible to diseases and requires sufficient sunlight to ripen in order to produce a distinctive wine.

In the AOC of Saint-Péray Marsanne is used to produce both still and sparkling wines. Outside of the Northern Rhone it is cultivated in the Languedoc, where it is blended with Viognier and Roussanne.

Wines are also produced using Marsanne is Australia using some of the world's oldest vines. It is also grown in California, and in Switzerland where it is known as Ermitage Blanc.

Typically the wines are densely coloured with aromas of melon, pear, honeysuckle and often nuts and spice.
