Quinta do Infantado

Quinta do Infantado was established in 1816 by the Portuguese royal family for their crown heir, Infante D. Pedro, the future King D. Pedro IV of Portugal and D. Pedro I of Brazil - hence the name of the estate; “Infante” is Portuguese for “Prince”. The Quinta was bought by Joᾶo Lopez Roseira in 1883. Until his acquisition Quinta do Infantado had always sold their grapes, but he began to produce wines under the Quinta's name. It wasn't until 1979 that port was first estate bottled by fourth generation brothers Antonio, Luis and Joᾶo Da Siva Lopez Roseira, and today the house continues to produce wines and ports side by side, headed up by fifth generation cousins Joᾶo and Alvaro Roseira. The Quinta is located in the Valle de Gontelho, in the Cima Corgo subregion of the Douro Valley, about 4 kilometres from Pinhᾶo. This is a prized micro-region where Quinta do Infantado have 46 hectares under vine on nine vineyard sites, mostly on steep terraced parcels and all with A classification, the highest grade in the Douro demarcated region. They farm sustainably and 12 hectares of their vineyards are certified organic. 20 different Douro red and white grape varieties are cultivated on schist soils at between 150 and 350 metres above sea level. Some of their vines are over 100 years old. Quinta do Infantado bottle their production on site instead of transporting in bulk down to Vila Nova de Gaia. They are traditionalists, who still tread by foot in lagares for their top wines and ports. The range from this small producer is superb. All their vineyards are classified A, the equivalent of a Grand Cru, then all their wines and ports are necessarily of an impressive quality and are very well-priced.
