Wine tasting notes

This is a complex, elegant and intense wine. The bouquet is marked by the ripe fruit flavours of apples, pears and melon. Pleasant floral notes and gorse flower can be also found, the characteristic of great Godellos. This wine is very fresh and well-balanced, with a typical light varietal bitterness which gives it breadth in the mouth.

Winery Information

A Coroa

Angel Lopez and his family founded this winery in 2002 after spending years in the nursery business in Valdeorras. Native to the region, they supplied a majority of the wineries with their vines and have been on the forefront of Valdeorras' reborn interest in the Godello varietal. Godello was one of the original varietals grown in the region by the Romans over two thousand years ago, since then the grape has slowly drifted toward obscurity until newer winemakers in the area decided to resurrect.. read more

Expert Reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2014)87 pts

Apr 2016 - Luis Gutierrez - The 2014 A Coroa is pure, fresh, unoaked Godello that is quite straightforward. It is fruit-driven and fresh with flavors of pears and apples, and good acidity.

Vinous/Stephen Tanzer (2013)90 pts

Pale yellow-gold. Potent, mineral-laced citrus and orchard fruit aromas show very good clarity and pick up an appealing floral nuance with air. Dry and precise on the palate, offering bitter quinine and Meyer lemon flavors that give way to richer pear and melon with air. Closes stony and long, with repeating florality and a touch of tarragon. -- Josh Raynolds

A lot of depth and minerality jump up from the bouquet. The palate on this slate-driven Godello is rich but right, the perfect balance between body, acidity and fruit pulp. Tastes of dry spiced apple and melon, with a bit of citrus. A stately, elegant wine with power to boot. Ideal for Valdeorras. — M.S. (7/1/2011)

Miscellaneous (2010)

Eric Asimov, NY Times - comparitive tasting of 20 Godello wines - "It’s not quite so neat as that, as individual producers have their own ambitions. Our No. 1 wine, the 2010 from A. Coroa in Valdeorras, indeed reflected the regional style described by Kerin. It was clean, fresh and inviting, with deep, rich mineral and fruit flavors that were ripe and savory and a texture that made you want to keep sipping. This wine did not merely represent potential; it was potential realized. "
