A Mano

A MANO
Mark Shannon, a Californian winemaker, and Elvezia [Elvie] Sbalchiero, a marketing guru from Friuli, met in Sicily in 1997, where they were both working at the time. The following year Mark proposed travelling to Puglia to see the old Primitivo vines of the area, as he had heard about Primitivo's similarity to Zinfandel; the USA's signature red grape. So they extended their holiday to Puglia – and never left! Their wines define Puglia, which is ironic as neither are native to the region, but they have embraced the traditions and way of life in the heel of Italy, producing wine exclusivity from native grapes. Their winery is located in Bari, within what is known as the “golden triangle” for Primitivo, an area between Toriccella, Sava and Manduria. Planted on deep red alluvial soils, some of their vines are 100 years old. They named their label “A Mano”, which means “handmade” in Italian, and as Mark and Elvie cultivate the vines by hand, and oversee every miniscule detail in their wines journey from the vineyard to the bottle, they can truly say that they are “made by hand”.Their complex wines are made with passion and deliver extraordinary quality and they are exceptional value for money.
