The Abad?a Retuerta Estate occupies over 700 hectares of terrain, and its name comes from the combination of two words that define and describe the territory: R?vula (river bank) and Torta (twisting, winding). The Abadia Retuerta winery is located in the heart of the ?golden mile? of Ribera del Duero, with neighbours that include Pingus, Vega Sicilia and Alion . Over 204 hectares of vineyards are spread out on hillsides ranging in altitude from a maximum 850 metres down to the southern bank of the Duero River. Most of the world's best varieties of soil are represented. Designed by famous French enologist, Pascal Delbeck, in 1996, Abad?a Retuerta winery is a surprising combination of tradition and modernity, recognized as one of the most advanced wineries in Europe. Currently, Angel Anoc?bar Beloqui (PhD in Enology and Ampelography from the University of Bordeaux and International Wine Challenge 2005 Winemaker of the Year) coordinates the entire process, from the vine to the bottle. Pascal Delbeck (of Ch?teau Ausone ) remains the consulting winemaker.First planted in 1991, primarily on the northern, stonier and less fertile side of the Duero valley, the vineyards surround the stunning 12th Century Santa Mar?a de Retuerta monastery, to the west of the region. In an endeavour to establish Christianity in Castile during the Reconquest, the Count of Castile commissioned the construction of a series of convent-fortresses. As a result, in 1146, the Premonstratensian order built the monastery of Santa Mar?a de Retuerta in a beautiful enclave on the banks of the Duero River. The monks of the order of Saint Norbert were given terras et vineas (land and vines) and the second abbot brought the first French grape varieties from Burgundy that were planted in the region. Since then, the land of this estate has been dedicated to the vine, to silence and to devotion. Today, they confidently state that the three essential characteristics of the Medieval order: work, peace and hospitality, are still part of the spirit of Abad?a Retuerta. The wines, are made from a careful selection of the best grapes in the vineyards and are a bold commitment to terroir driven wines. Abad?a Retuertas' philosophy is based on winemaking by plot. The composition of the soil of each of our 54 plots is different: clay by the riverbank, pebbles and sand on the slopes, gravel in the lower parts of the estate, and limestone on the higher ground ? Therefore, each terroir contains only one grape variety, which is carefully selected to extract the best the land has to offer.
