Wine tasting notes

Deeply-coloured, a shimmering jet-plum in colour, with a bright, firm rim, this is immediately engaging, offering a heady array of spiced old vine fruit, crushed stone minerals and violets. The palate echoes this aromatic profile with a crescendo of fowers and wild fruit vying for dominance, all complemented by darker, brooding scorched earth and hints of tobacco. Luscious, succulent and ripe, there is clearly power here yet the dominant personality is all about elegance - really fine

Achaval Ferrer

Mendoza based Achavel-Ferrer, described by Jamie Goode as Argentina's most impressive producer was founded in 1998 by a group of Italian and Argentinean friends who all shared a dream to make world-class wine. Their vision was to focus on vineyard practices in order to create fruit that expresses the land. Aug 15. Reviewer : Luis Gutierrez - 2012 was a warmer, riper vintage than 2013 in Mendoza, but it shows little in the 2012 Malbec Finca Bella Vista. Perhaps the only hint could be that the fruit from riper vintages takes the oak in a different way and curiously enough the 2012 shows more oak influence than the 2013. There is a great combination of floral and fresh characters and the Mediterranean profile with some aromas of dried herbs. The palate reveals a serious wine with grainy tannins that add an elegant rusticity. Again, the only problem here is having the 2013 next to this great 2012.

Feb 15 . By Stephen Tanzer. Bright ruby. Rich, deep aromas of ripe blackberry, licorice, tropical dark chocolate and menthol plus a whiff of game, all lifted by a pungent mineral element. Plush, seamless and ripe, showing a chocolatey quality to its savory dark berry flavors but energized throughout by lively acidity. Boasts outstanding breadth and length, finishing with noble tannins and terrific length and lift. Wonderfully full and primary. Although this is impeccably balanced from the start it would be a shame not to give it time in bottle to fully express itself. This strikes me as a bit more fruity and less eartly than the 2011 Finca Bella Vista, which was more forbidding a year ago.

Tasted Sept 15 - 100-year-old vines. 15 months in new French oak. Dark purple. Very intense, savoury, wild thyme. Lots of personality.

Dec 14 - Unctuous, intensely fruity and pure, with red currant, dried raspberry, boysenberry and spiced cherry flavors, supported by lip-smacking acidity. The lively finish echoes with brambly notes

Shows plenty of sliced lemon and citrus rind character. Hints of minerals too. Full to medium body. Bright finish. Delicious now.

Bella Vista in Perdriel makes Malbecs that are equally delicious young as they are with five to ten years’ bottle age. This is a stunning wine: mineral and fresh, with rose petal and violet perfume, slinky tannins, subtle oak and a finish that lingers on the palate. Winemaking of the highest order from Santiago Achaval. Drink: 2014-20

Vinification Notes

With Finca Bella Vista our goal is to allow the vineyard to express its “terroir”. Malbec is the flagship red variety from Argentina. It has found in Mendoza its true home. We work as hard as necessary during eleven months in the vineyard, to produce grapes that will need very little intervention during the winemaking process. The climate, the viticulturural program, the irrigation management: Everything is thought as a step towards the goal of true expression of the vineyard. Finca Bella Vista´s personality shines through the wine, vintage after vintage, with a recognizable and repeated signature.
