Agricola Punica

AGRICOLA PUNICA
Agricola Punica's story began when Marquis Nicolò Incisa Della Rochetta, the owner of Tenuta San Guido [who make Sassicaia], Antonello Pilloni, the President of Cantine di Santadi, and the legendary Tuscan wine consultant Giacomo Tachis, met for dinner one evening in Verona during Vinitaly, and laid the foundations for a wine collaboration. It was Tachis who convinced the others that great wines could be made from grapes grown in the Sulcis region in the southwestern corner of Sardinia – he thought the area was perfect for the production of wines, recognising the potential of the distinctive protracted light conditions there combined with the influence of the sea, which made the region unique. And so in 2002 they bought a property consisting of two estates, Barrua and Narcao in an area known as Basso Sulcis - and Agricola Punica was born. These two vineyards consist of 70 hectares of vines planted with native and French grape varieties, on very deep stony, clayey soils. There is particular emphasis on the Carignano [Carignan] grape variety, which thrives in the special climate conditions of Sulcis, with some very old bush-trained vines complemented with new plantings. These iconic award-winning wines are made under the appellation of IGT Isola dei Nuraghi and, as such, are made in a Super Tuscan facsimile, combining Sardinian tradition with international sophistication – there is nothing quite like them!
