Allegrini

Allegrini was founded in the mid-20th century by Giovanni Allegrini, but the Allegrini family have been involved in wine since the 1500's, and have centuries of winemaking experience behind them. The estate lies in Valpolicella, in the western part of the Veneto between Verona and Lake Garda in north east Italy. All of Allegrini's wines are made from estate-grown fruit, which come from six vineyard sites in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico region planted at altitudes of between 200 and 500 metres above sea level. The soils are varied, but predominantly calcareous. Following Giovanni's untimely death in 1983, the estate passed to his three children, Walter, Franco and Marilisa, who ran the business together until Walter's death in 2003. Now Franco is the winemaker and Marilisa the Managing Director. Allegrini produce an impeccable range of wines, everyone with its own distinctive character. They are the benchmark for Amarone, and also created Valpolicella's first single vineyard Corvina in 1979. They are famously known for being anti-establishment regarding DOC regulations, resulting in their basic Valpolicella being denied the Classico designation when they decided to bottle it under stelvin closure. They also produce a range of exceptional single vineyard wines, with IGT designation because they include grape varieties not sanctioned for Valpolicella – these Super Venetian wines are outstanding and truly elite. No surprise then that Allegrini are regarded as one of the best producers in the whole of Italy – in fact they are the most awarded winery in the Veneto!
