Altos Las Hormigas

ALTOS LAS HORMIGAS
It all began in 1995 when two friends, Alberto Antonini a well-known Tuscan winemaker, and entrepreneur Antonio Morescalchi took a trip to visit the wine areas of South America. They didn't get any further than Mendoza, where the high altitude vineyards and dry climate impressed, and the traditions and blend of cultures captivated. They were particularly fascinated by the Malbec grape, whose potential at the time had not been explored. Two other friends were also enthused and joined the venture: Attilio Pagli, a renowned Tuscan winemaker with two 100-point scoring wines to his name, and Carlos Vazquez, an Argentine agronomist who had worked with the Cantena group for 20 years. They purchased an estate in Lujan de Cuyo in 1996 and planted with Malbec at a time when other wineries were growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They presently have 40 hectares of their own vines in Lujan de Cuyo and 55 hectare in the Uco Valley. Working with Pedro Parra, South America's only terroir and soil specialist, Altos Las Hormigas have become an authority on terroir who identify each terroir unit on the basis of its climate, soil structure and morphology, and with this philosophy showcase how diverse the expression of Malbec can be. As they want the place of origin to express its personality in the wine, they therefore take a biodynamic approach, and also use minimal intervention winemaking practices. Of course now Malbec is Argentina's signature red grape variety and Altos Las Hormigas has won a reputation as one of the countries top Malbec specialists, producing some of the best wines Argentina has to offer. They decided on the name because in Argentina there is a saying “un trabajo de hormigas” or “a job for the ants”, which describes humble, patient and dedicated work - but the hard-work of their committed team of “ants” has been rewarded, and the ant has become their symbol.
