Antinori

ANTINORI are the 10th oldest family owned company in the world. The Antinori family have been involved in wine production in Tuscany for over six centuries, with Rinuccio de Antinori documented as making wine in 1180. But their wine story really began in 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the Winemakers Guild in Florence. In 1850 it was the purchase of the Tignanello estate in Tuscany that marked the beginning of the family's momentous expansion. Astute acquisition of vineyards followed, and whilst Marchesi Antinori's historical heritage lies in their estates in Tuscany and Umbria, they have also invested in other regions, both in Italy and abroad. Now, 26 generations later, Marchesi Piero Antinori is the Honorary President and the company is run by his three daughters – Albeira is the Director, with Alegra and Alessia both actively involved in the business - it’s all about “A’s” at Antinori! Piero says that ancient family roots play an important part in their philosophy but they have never hindered their innovative spirit. In 1971, when they added Cabernet Sauvignon to a Sangiovese blend and aged the wine in barriques, this statement became testament to what has become their flagship wine - the Super Tuscan Tignanello. This caused a major stir at the time, and Tignanello remains one of Italy's greatest wines. In fact Antinori have an extraordinary ingenuity for developing iconic wines! Research and development are an ongoing process both in the vineyards and in the cellars, and tradition, passion and intuition are the three driving forces that have seen Antinori decisively shape Italian viticulture, making them one of the most important winemakers of elite Italian wine.
