Axel Pauly

AXEL PAULY is regarded as one of the dynamic stars of German wine. He already had experience from doing vintages in California, New Zealand, and other parts of Germany when he took over the Pauly establishment from his father. The estate consists of 9 hectares, most of which are in the village of Lieser in the heart of the Mosel Valley, with an additional small plot in neighbouring Bernkastel. Naturally Riesling is the major player here, but there is also a little Spätburgunder which produces high-quality red wines. The vines are planted on steep slopes, some of them on the vertiginous sides of the famous Niederberg-Helden vineyard in Lieser, a site which had already been classified as Grand Cru by Napoleon Bonaparte's terroir experts when the Mosel was under French rule in 1804. The blue and grey slate soils of Lieser create more mineral wines than the red slate of Bernkastel, but all the wines' trademarks are pure fruit and low alcohol. The witty label features the Mosel hills, but if you turn the label on its side, you will see the “Tres Naris”, or three noses of Axel, his father and his grandfather, which reflect the three wine generations of the Pauly family – all distinctive – like their land and their wine!
