Wine tasting notes

Deep coloured and intensely perfumed, with notes of plum, strawberries and ripe cherries with a hint of toast. On the palate it is powerful and concentrated, the robust, spicy tannins softened by vanilla, strawberry and cassis, the chunky, fleshy Bobal character given finesse by the Tempranillo and Cabernet blend. Long and rich through to the finish.

June 2016 - Luis Gutierrez - The red 2014 Mestizaje is the entry-level blend of Bobal with some 10% Syrah, 6% Garnacha, 5% Merlot and a 2% pinch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo; the grapes comes from head-pruned, dry-farmed vines planted mostly in the early 1990s. Each variety is fermented separately and then aged for one year in oak vats and barrels. The wine has seen a change since 2012... In 2013 it's 100% grapes from the Terrerazo estate—and therefore a Vino de Pago—but more important, the percentage of Bobal has increased and they look for a fresher profile, which means the wine has gained in drinkability. There are no more notes of chocolate that were very prominent in 2006, 2007 or 2009; they have taken the Tempranillo out of the blend, a grape that has a tendency to get very ripe in the zone; and the wine is better balanced and focused. The palate shows also some chalkiness (all the grapes now come from vineyards in Finca Terrerazo, where there is a high content in limestone), and a Mediterranean character, but without heat. A very tasty and drinkable Mediterranean red.

Jan 2016 - Vivid ruby. Lively cherry, raspberry and fresh flowers on the nose, with a vivacious peppery element. Silky and focused, offering juicy red berry flavors that flesh out slowly on the back half. The gently tannic finish hangs on with very good, floral-driven persistence and echoing pepperiness. -- Josh Raynolds (2012)16 pts

Sept 2016 - Grandes Pagos. Dark crimson. Really quite savoury and un-Bobal-like! A real beginning, middle and end to this wine that I suspect would surprise quite a few wine lovers with its sophistication. GV

Best Buy - Lightly medicinal scents of plum and raspberry come with aromatic complexities like lemon peel and a dusting of cinnamon. This is crisp, focused and friendly on the palate, with ripe plum, blackberry, chocolate and oak-spice flavors. A long, steady, toasty finish makes this Bobal-led blend from a single designated property called El Terrerazo an outright winner.

Vinification Notes

Organic viticulture at 800 meters altitude where traditional farming meets modern techniques in this young wine from Mustiguillo. The varieties are vinified separately and undergo malolactic in a mixture of oak and stainless steel. The final blend spends 11 months in French oak.
