Wine tasting notes

A medium-depth wine, vivid cherry colouring with scarlet edging. The fruit emerges smoothly even with a still glass, the wood is almost imperceptible. The fresh red fruit reminds one of cherries and a bouquet of floral notes completes the landscape of the wine Medium body, very pleasant, tasty and fresh. The tannin is highly polished giving the feeling of roundness. The fruit feeling is linked to the cherry leaving a pleasant remembrance of freshness in the mouth.

Winery Information

Bodegas Roda

Ro-Da is the contraction of the surnames of the two owners, Mario Rottlant and Carmen Daurella. Since 1987, they have sought to establish a unique expression of Rioja, based on 17 different vineyards of old vines in poor soils (a mixture of sandstone and clay/limestone) all with long histories in quality Rioja wine growing. Roda’s main vineyards are in the Estacion district near Haro. Roda wines are essentially ‘vinos de viñas viejas’ (old vines wines), from vineyards 2/3 owned,.. read more

April 2015 - Luis Gutierrez - The 2012 Sela will be released in March 2015, and it’s a great example of Sela. It opens to bright red fruit, more shiny than 2011, and is still pretty young showing faint lactic notes and more traces of the barrel that should be absorbed with time. 2012 could be fresher and more accessible. It’s an elegant and balanced wine, with some fine-grained tannins that will be polished with bottle age. The palate is very tasty and has almost salty flavors that are quite gentle and velvety. In 2012 Sela was a blend of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 1% Garnacha. 99,383 bottles were produced.

Nov 2015. By Josh Raynolds. Bright ruby. Fragrant aromas of ripe red berries, candied rose and incense. Spicy and penetrating in the mouth, offering juicy flavors of raspberry, bitter cherry and allspice. Shows very good focus and lift--and repeating red fruit and floral notes--on the long, gently tannic finish. This wine went through its secondary fermentation in large French oak foudres and was then moved into small, used French oak barrels for another year. -- Josh Raynolds (2011)16+ pts

Oct 2014 - 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano, 2% Garnacha. Produced from the 2008 vintage onwards. From 15- to 30-year-old vines. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in French oak. 80,000 bottles produced. Salty sweet nose. Easy and good acidity. Restaurant wine? Almost ready.

This supple red is balanced and focused, with restrained flavors of black cherry, tobacco and smoke. A bit austere, but has density. Drink now through 2022.

July 2015 - Very aromatic with lavender, mushroom, stone and dark fruits on the nose. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a long, long finish. Fermented in large French oak vats. Finesse here. Drink or hold. 96% tempranillo, 3% graciano, 1% garnacha. A beauty from a beautiful year.

Vinification Notes

Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation processes carried out in large French oak vats. Aged 12 months in 100% semi-new French oak barrels
