Wine tasting notes

This wine has a strong vibrant aroma, tropical fruits of pineapple, litchi and granadilla. This is followed by a firm crisp palate signalling a determined structure with parallel fruit calling one straight back to the glass! Sauvignon blanc is our eternal crowd pleaser! Where each year we bottle it fresh while the fragrance is bright and a loving palate displays its certainty as South Africa's best performing white wine.

Winery Information

Bouchard Finlayson

Situated in South Africa’s Walker Bay, Bouchard Finlayson finds itself in one of the coolest wine-growing areas of the Cape, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir prevail. A broad range of aromatic varietals complement and bolster the Bouchard Finlayson portfolio, indeed Hannibal is one of South Africa’s most unique (and awarded) red blends. A 5 Star Platter rating for their 2015 Galpin Peak Pinot Noir has anchored the estate at the very forefront of South African Pinot.

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2015)87 pts

The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc Walker Bay, which the estate compares to the 2004, has a crisp, green apple and gooseberry-scented bouquet that perhaps needs just a little more "pizzazz." The palate is well balanced with good weight in the mouth, and touches of melon and grapefruit with a fine line of acidity on the easy-going finish.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2014)89 pts

May 2017 - Stephen Tanzer - Yellow-straw color. Slightly musky scents of tropical fruits, grapefruit pith, pear and chalky minerality, plus a hint of brown spices. Supple on entry, then pungently spicy in the middle, offering inviting but still-brisk flavors of guava and citrus zest, with a bit of unabsorbed CO2 providing added freshness. Lovely intensity here without any hardness. Finishes dry and firm but without the length for outstanding. (2011)16.5 pts

Published : 13-Jun-2011. Clean and light on the nose. A touch of guava, softly grassy with gripping acidity. All understated gentility. A bit like Peter Finlayson himself, in fact. Lovely. (TC)

Wine Spectator (2014)87 pts

This has a smoky, honeyed edge, with wet straw, lemon curd and yellow apple notes. Creamy overall, showing just enough zip to stay honest.

James Suckling (2015)90 pts

Aromas of peach and lemon with a full body, oily texture and a long and flavorful finish. A fruit-forward white with a pretty finish. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast,, (6/1/2011), 86pts (2010) –“Ripe fruit flavors are countered by a fresh citrus zing in the mouth, with notes of underripe melon and hard banana sprinkling the bouquet. Drink now."— L.B.

John Platter (2010/9)4 stars

John Platter,, 4 Stars (2010) –"2010 step up on 2009 (3½ Stars) - less ripe, more tropical. Orange-blossom, honeysuckle aromas; perfumed. Delicately harmonious, food-friendly textured finish." John Platter,, 3½ Stars (2009) –"09 cool-climate crispness, notes of unripe pineapple & granadilla. Rounded mouthfeel, uplifting finish. 08 (4 Stars) more complex."
