Food Matching

A fun, cheaper alternative to Champagne for a party or an aperitif, this will take on many of the same foods that good, non-vintage Champagne can take on. Try this with all kinds of fish and seafood, including smoked and raw, and don't be afraid to try it with all kinds of spicy food, such as Indian, Chinese and Thai. Because of its good, clean acidity, it can also take on richer, cheese dishes and dishes containing cream, and Michel Roux suggests deep-fried almond-coated Camembert.

Wine tasting notes

The colour is a surprise in itself. Bright and shimmering cherry red with very fine bubbles. Violet overtones on a peony pink froth. The nose is an aria of red fruit enhanced by its sparkling texture. In the mouth it is an explosion of red berries: blackberry, blackcurrant, raspberry and strawberry. Rounded with a delicate structure. Complex aromas and freshness with a hint of oak combine to make this a truly intriguing and special wine.

Winery Information

Established by Etienne Bouvet in 1851, this is the second oldest producer of sparkling wine in Saumur, and like many of the other leading houses they are today based in St-Hilaire-St-Florent. This town, effectively now a suburb of Saumur on the riverbank just downstream from the main town itself, was where Etienne set up his business. Bouvet, born in 1828 to a local vigneron..

This is a lightly sweet, red sparkling wine with ripe strawberry fruits, a touch of tannin and soft acidity. A fine partner for a fruit dessert or blue cheese.
