Buitenverwachting

Buitenverwachting means “Beyond Expectation”, and originally formed part of the Constantia estate which was founded by Simon Van De Stel, the first Governor of the New Dutch Colony of The Cape, who we know planted vines on his farm. The land that comprises the Buitenverwachting estate was first sold to Cornelius Brink in 1773, and in 1895 Ryk Cloete planted 90,000 vines and the estate flourished as a wine farm. However, Buitenverwachting then passed through the hands of many different owners, all of whom made wine up to the middle of the 20th century, when the vineyards became neglected. But in 1980 a couple from Hamburg, Richard and Christine Mueller, bought it and revived vine cultivation. Their first vintage was in 1985 after the vineyard areas had stood idle for 30 years. The vines are planted on deep, decomposed granite, cooled by sea breezes from the surrounding oceans – perfect for growing Sauvignon Blanc, and Buitenverwachting are Sauvignon Blanc specialists. However on a few north-facing slopes the conditions are ideal for growing red grape varieties, and this is where the fruit comes from for their iconic Bordeaux blend, Christine. The wines from this historic South African winery are now highly renowned and certainly live up to their name – Beyond Compare!
