Wine tasting notes

We release our Chardonnay Reserve in the first year after the harvest. It has a bright straw yellow colour with golden highlights and exquisite aroma, with scents reminiscent of tropical fruit, ginger, spice and oatmeal. Well structured and minerally with flavours of lime and toasted almonds on the palate. Prime drinking begins at 3-4 years, although top vintages remain impressive for up to 10 years.

Winery Information

Cape Chamonix

Chamonix Wine Farm is nestled against Mont Rochelle mountain, deep within the rich wine-growing valley of Franschhoek in the Western Cape. Formerly part of historic La Cotte granted to the Huguenots in 1688, Chamonix today comprises some 300 hectares. April 2017 - Neal Martin - The 2015 Chardonnay Reserve is matured in 70% new oak including some in concrete eggs or 14 months with bâtonnage. It has a clean and crisp bouquet, light tropical notes at first, flecks of white chocolate and almond lending an exotic touch. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, touches of peach and melon at first dovetailing into a slightly saline finish. I would have liked a little more depth and persistence here, especially considering this is a Reserve. Hopefully it will gain more weight in bottle.

June 2015 - right yellow. Sexy leesy complexity to the white peach and mineral aromas. Firmly built and tightly coiled, offering juicy, concentrated flavors of stone fruits, pear and minerals. This very dry and sophisticated Chardonnay shows a tactile, slightly phenolic finish that calls for a bit of patience. But this wine should evolve gracefully. -- Stephen Tanzer (2013)16.5 pts

Sept '14 - Spends 14 months in barrel, and 10% is matured in Nomblot eggs (concrete tanks). Really racy, long and finishes appetisingly. Zingy.

Inviting, with a singed almond frame around the tasty apple, ginger and pear flavors. A hint of matchstick runs through the finish, giving this solid range. A crowd-pleaser.

An impressive follow up to the stellar 2014 release, albeit made in a warmer vintage. Leesy, smoky, refined and well balanced, this was fermented in a combination of new and old oak and concrete eggs. Complex, focused and very mineral, it would hold its own in a line up of Puligny-Montrachet Premiers Crus. Drink: 2016-21
