Cesconi

Azienda Agricola Cesconi have a long winemaking tradition that began in 1751 in the town of Pressano in the region of Trentino-Alto Adige in north-east Italy. Bernardino Cesconi would load his wagon with wine and take it by oxen to Innsbruck to sell to the court of the Habsburgs. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire his son Rinaldo began to supply the local taverns with their wines, but it was Rinaldo's son Paolo who began to acquire more vineyards and grow the business. Today it remains family owned and run by fourth generation four Cesconi brothers, Alessandro, Franco, Roberto and Lorenzo. The vineyards are divided between two very different winemaking areas. Six hectares of vines surround the winery in the Pressano Hills planted at an altitude of between 300 and 500 metres above sea level on soils of Werfen formation which are incredibly rich in minerals. The climate here is continental with strong diurnal variations, and the wines are noted for their defined structures and intense flavours; the white Nosiola, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and the red Lagrein are grown here. Some of these vines are over 100 years old. The other sites are in the Valle dei Laghi, north of Lake Garda. Here there is a Mediterranean climate. Manzoni Bianco is cultivated in the Prabi vineyard on soils that have a high proportion of sand of alluvial origin, and Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the Pivier vineyard on soils rich in clay and silt. All the vineyards are farmed organically and they have recently stared to use biodynamic principles. Cesconi take a minimal intervention approach in the winery, using native yeasts for fermentation and use neutral wood, only buying new barrels when absolutely necessary. They are now recognised as one of the top producers in the area, making precise, authentic wines with remarkable concentration that express the true terroirs of the region.
